South Africa's popular city of Durban is a lively destination that has developed at a rapid pace in recent years. The flat central areas of the city are the locations for Durban's business and historic districts, as well as a beautiful stretch of coastline.

Central District

Durban's central district lies at the heart of the city. Amidst the hustle and bustle of this busy neighbourhood, visitors will find most of the city's heritage architecture, including museums and art galleries, and many other tourist attractions. As night falls, the city centre tends to empty as workers leave for their homes in residential districts or suburbs.

Indian District

Located to the east of the city centre, the Indian Quarter is where visitors can find the Jumah Mosque, as well as some lively local markets and traditional herbalist shops.

Golden Mile District

The city's vibrant beachfront district runs from Addington Beach to the Bay of Plenty, taking in South, Dairy and North beaches along the way. Visitors can relax on the vast stretches of golden sand or take to the warm Indian Ocean waters. Artificial piers, hotels, restaurants and amusement arcades make this neighbourhood a fun place to visit. The Golden Mile is also the location of the city's major tourist attraction, uShake Marine World.

Victoria Embankment District

Durban's other waterfront district, centred on Victoria Embankment, is home to the BAT Centre and Natal's Maritime Museum. Most of the district's activity, however, gravitates around the yacht basin, the headquarters of the city's famed Royal Natal Yacht Club.

Berea

This popular garden suburb is located on a ridge above Durban, offering some fine views over the city. Other attractions in this neighbourhood include the city's acclaimed Botanic Gardens, as well as a bustling pavement cafe culture, fashionable boutiques and art galleries, and some rather fine colonial buildings.

Durban North / Umhlanga District

A short distance north of the city centre are the suburbs of Durban North and Umhlanga. In recent years, they have been transformed from small villages to thriving suburban neighbourhoods. Attractions include beautiful beaches, seafront hotels and upmarket shops and shopping centres.

Morningside District

Morningside is a particularly sought-after neighbourhood in the city. Indeed, it ranks in the top three of Durban's most popular suburbs. Its colonial-style villas, green parks, and plethora of restaurants make this a good place to pay a visit.

Glenwood District

One of Durban's oldest suburbs, Glenwood is now a trendy residential area with an attractive mix of shops, cafes and restaurants and colonial-style architecture.
